About Zombies

Loving The Walking Dead and Fearing The Walking Dead.

I have a few comments on these two shows. First, I wish they would not have killed of Shane. Yes he was a mess, but I think he was salvageable and could have even been useful down the road. He'd be a great one for having a twin brother or look a like cousin somewhere for the writers to bring into things. This show has a habit of knocking off incredibly good actors. Considering the average character lifespan, it's surprising they attract so many top notchers, but they somehow manage it.

So far the only two I've been happy to see go are Merl and the Gov, and not because of the characters. David Morissey aka the Governor was a bad fit. So was Michael Rooker as Merl Dixon. These are both good actors, but this was not the show for them. I see these two guys fitting more into war, westerns, or historical dramas. I'd say apocalypse or science fiction of any kind is not where they should be plying their trade.

Now for my opinions on Fear the Walking Dead. It's only been a few episodes, but the mother, Madison Clark aka Kim Dickens, has got to go! This woman's acting has so much cheese Kraft should sue. Also, her character isn't doing her kids any favors by not telling them what is going on out in the world. Information is power, and she's pretty much leaving her kids, especially the daughter, defenseless. Her refusal to help them accept the new reality is inexcusable.

This character gets my bad mother of the year vote for TV characters. She's also a hysterical knot-head! She needs to get her own crap together. I hope they make Tobias aka Lincoln A. Castellanos a main character, or at least a regular one. I like this kid. He says a lot of it. When the shit hits the fan, like a human plague of some sort, it'll be geeks and dorks like this one who will save lives. Why? First, they don't buy the government's crap, and second, they've usually been educated by books and TV for years. A lot of them already know what do when the shit hits the fan. See a zombie, you kill the brain. Shoot it. Bash it. Whatever it takes.

For the daughter, I see a spoiled little wench who thinks she knows it all, and will get people killed, then sit around and whine about losing her trips to the mall and her cell phone. Granted, this is the character, and Alicia Debman-Carey plays her well, which kind of worries me.

However, Frank Dillane is also doing an excellent job as the junky son. At this point, I would really like to slap the shit out of Nick and tell him to get his ass together before he gets someone killed.

The other characters strike me as somewhat mediocre. I wouldn't be sad t see them get eaten or turned. I'd like to see the survivors fighting the good fight be the kids and Tobias.

Now on to Z Nation and iZombie. I'm not impressed with either of these shows. In my opinion these two are on the back side of stupid and need to give it up and go the hell away. However, I do really dig Citizen Z's aka DJ Qualls' pad. A military base all to yourself would be way too cool! You could stockpile supplies for the end of the world forever. Although, I do hate seeing DJ caught up in this stupid shit.

This guy was great in Supernatural as Garth Fitzgerald. I could really see this guy fitting into a crime show as a super geek fighting the forces of evil with his computer and his team. Like Penelope Garcia aka Kirsten Vangsness, Dr. Spencer Reid aka Mathew Gray Gubler in Criminal Minds, and Abby Sciuto aka Pauley Perrette in N.C.I.S. These are the kinds of shows this guy should really be working. I can also imagine him in a place like Moon Base Alpha, if they ever decide to update that show. It had a good concept, but was done badly in all areas. They redid BSG and rocked it! Now they need to do the same thing with MBA, and put Quall in their science department.

I also wasn't too impressed with World War Z. The movie had potential, but Pitt was just the wrong person for this one. I don't see him as a zombie movie guy. I can see him caught in a natural disaster, spy flick, maybe even a milk scifi, but not a zombie apocalypse. He just doesn't fit. If they want to use him in end of the world stuff, I suggest they start looking at earthquake, flood, meteor hit or hits, etc. types of movies. I wasn't all that impressed with the special effects zombies either. Especially the ones crawling up the wall. They weren't done as well as they should've been, not by a long shot.

For Dawn of the Dead and the remake, the remake wasn't a total wash out, but I prefer the original. Ving Rhames, while a good actor, was not a good fit, and the other actors weren't up to snuff. They supported his character poorly at best. Ving should have bitch slapped the lot of them, then walked out. It was painful to see him trying to carry so much dead weight, no pun intended.

I'm also a fan of the old black and white Night of the Living Dead. Duane Jones did an awesome job of it. I'd call him the only stand out among the actors in it. The rest should have stayed home. As for the remake of this movie done in 1990, if you own a copy of it, burn it or take it out and toss it into the street for a big truck to run over. Don't insult your eyes by watching it. Some things just should not be done, and 1990 remake of this movie is definitely one of them.

Let us now move on to Day of the Dead. I speak of course of the 1985 version. The version done in 2008 didn't impress me. There aren't enough bad things I can say about the 2008 version of this movie, so we won't bother. Life it too short, and it's not important enough.

Day of the Dead 1985 however had a good concept. It was solidly done for the most part, but there were a few issues. The military butthead and the nutcase doctor should have been eaten before the movie started. Bad fits and bad acting. What I did like about the movie was the idea of the underground base, but it could have been done better.

Now, close your eyes and picture this for a few moments.

A mixed group of people stuck in an underground military base. Not just some surviving military and doctors, but some regular people too. A few animals would be nice too. People like their pets, and many need them.

First things to do are to clear out the dirt tunnels and shore up the up top defenses. For the tunnels - Send a number of 6 person teams in to clean them out with weapons meant to damage the brain and take zombies down, and make sure the ones you send are mentally stable enough for the job, and don't let anyone wander around alone.

Next, the top side fence. It's a good idea, but not very secure. It might hold some back, but after a while too many zombies at it could bring it down from just their combined weight leaning against it. Find some metal poles, sharpen the ends, and go out to the fence and stick the ends into the brains of the zombies trying to get into the base. Sliding the poles through the holes in the fence should work nicely. One quick shove to punch the sharpened pole end into the brain and down they should go for you.

Now, once you've cleared the fence, or at least gotten things down to a manageable level, you'll need vehicles. There were some on the base in the movie. Make your choices wisely. Considering how slow the zombies were in this movie, speed isn't really much of an issue. Worry more about mileage, protection, and power.

You want to go find tractor trailers and similar vehicles. After bringing them back to base, you'll want to cover the gaps under any trailer with something solid. Once the view is blocked from the underside, park it just inside the fence with the blocked side beside the fence. Get as close as possible to the fence without hitting it. The closer it sits to the fence, the more likely it can help support the fence. You're also blocking the view beyond the fence into the interior. They won't be trying to get at what they can't see or hear. If you're worried about scent, hang a few rotting and terminated zombies on the fence. Their smell will help hide your scent. The whole idea is to make yourselves pretty much invisible or nonexistent to them, then maybe they'll wander off.

If you're lucky enough to find a crane that will lift shipping containers, and bring it back, you won't have to build anything to block the view under the trailer. You can just lift the containers off the trailers, then place them right on the ground inside the fence.

In case it hasn't hit you, you're building a wall. You might also get lucky enough to find useful items inside the containers. Good, solid gates should also be a priority. Thick wood would work, but iron or steel is better. You could even use a vehicle, like a panel truck, school, bus or something similar, with metal plates welded on to it's side. Back it up along the wall to open, then pull forward to close back up.

Once the tunnels are clear and the wall and gates are built. Provided you have a viable water source, which I believe all bases do, it's time to think more on self sustainability. If you have seasons to deal with, the dirt tunnels you've just cleared might be used to grow food in the colder months. This will require lighting, but generator fuel may become an issue. This is where the dead come into things again.

Back in 1985 I don't think they had solar and wind options for electricity, but there was nuclear and steam. If you don't have nuclear, a good steam system could kick out a lot of power. In a closed system the water recycles, and as for fuel to burn for heating the water, burn the dead. They're not gonna give a shit. Besides, I'd think they'd be a good fuel. If you don't have nuclear and can't come up with a steam powered system for electricity, then you'll need to go out and find fuel tankers for your generators.

This brings us to another aspect of zombie apocalypse survival. Putting together salvage groups to go find fuel and other useful items. These groups should also be familiar with rescue, just on the off chance they actually do manage to find someone alive. Every member should be capable of defending themselves with weapons other than guns. Guns make noise. Noise attracts the dead. Even if they don't see you, we've been shown they'll follow sound. Guns should be the last resort. Some sort of body armor would be a good idea too. Possibly pieced together from sports equipment and riot gear. It should cover as much of the body as possible to protect it, but should be lightweight and easy to move in while wearing. Anyone chosen for these groups should be physically and mentally fit for the task at hand. People who are not can always do jobs inside the base where they are unlikely to find themselves in a combat situation.

The concept is simple. No one is coming to help you. The government is not coming to help you. The only people who can help you are you and the people with you. Everyone should have a job, and everyone should be willing to learn as many jobs as possible.

Some key people you should try to have or find are people will medical training, anyone with mechanical knowledge, FARMERS familiar with both crops and livestock, electricians, military, police, hunters, and Do-it-yourselfers.

Some people will have a wide range of knowledge. A housewife who knows how to cook, sew, and grow a garden can be someone who could be more useful than you might think. She could cook, learn to stitch up injuries, help feed people by helping grow food, and who knows what else. Even elderly persons can be more useful than you might think. Especially considering all they may have learned in their life.

Another group you should be looking for are PREPPERS. They've been around for longer than most people think, and the skills they've taught themselves over the years could not only be useful to your little community, but could be taught to others in the community. What good is knowing what happened in 1492 if you can't defend yourself and something eats you?

Education is a good thing, but it must be the right kind of education for your situation. The wrong kind just makes you dead. I don't see dead as being all that smart. Do you?

All this being said, I'd like to see them redo Day of the Dead better than they did in 2008, and possibly more along the lines described here.

Now, lets have a talk about Land of the Dead. How they managed to talk John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper into doing this piece of shit I'll never know. I know I'm insulting shit films by calling this one a piece of shit, but I can't really think of a bad label that truly conveys how I feel about this movie.

I've seen some call this one of the best zombie movies they've ever watched, and I have just one thing to say to them. Get off the crack! If you think this piece of shit is even a mediocre movie, you're brain is already dead. Go dig a hole and lay down in it already. I have the same opinion of the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead.

The return of the living dead series of movies wasn't too bad, but they were more comedy than horror. I don't mind a bit of sick comedy, but there are limits as to how many movies a series should make. It's like the Friday the 13th's and Nightmare on Elm Street shit. They really over played those and tired me out on them.

I've seen a lot of horror over the years, such as zombies, misc monsters, etc., but these the ones coming to mind today.
